204th Meeting : 9th Dec 2013 : Thirumuraigal

Dr.Suresh Sivan of Madurai was the Guest Speaker on 9th Dec and on a very pleasant morning with a full house attendance delivered an excellent lecture on Thirumuraigal. It was totally an unusual experience to the members present as the speaker often during his lecture sung the Thirumurai poems in chaste tamil to the tune of laya and thala.Thirumurai is a collection of 12 holy scriptures and the teachings of it are like Vedas is both universal and eternal, the learned speaker commented at the beginning.Thevaram literally means God’s Garland of Appar,Sundarar and Sambandar sing the praise and glory of the Absolute in flawless poetical structure and countless imageries and these are like Mantras that can shower great blessings like good health and good married life to those who read them with Faith. The first nine works of Thirumurai are Stotram and the Tenth Thirumurai namely Thirumandhiram is Shastram and a marvelous text on the sophisticated concepts of Yoga Science.

Despite the multiplicity of Godheads one encounters in Hindu Mythology, a closer study of Thevaram poems would indicate that, infact, the reverse was true. All Saints were stressing the Oneness of the Supreme and Absolute in no uncertain terms. The essence of their philosophy is the only prerequisite to attain salvation is the absolute faith and surrender of the individual to the Divine and by doing so one gets a psychological boost and confidence to face up to any complex worldly situation, the speaker finally summed up his lecture thus.

On the whole, the members felt that it was a refreshing experience to have listened to the talk and to some of his songs ,both Tamil and Telugu Krithis, sung in chaste classical ragas.
