202nd Meeting : 11th Nov 2012 : Kurunthogai Inbam

11th Nov despite being an auspicious date for marriage and also the excitement of a Major Festival Deepavali round the corner, MRC members once again proved that they always support a Good Lecture with a full house presence for the talk of Dr.Anarkali,Thiruvarur on Kurunthokai Inbam.

The learned speaker ,at the outset, commented that there is no literature in the world similar to Tamil Sangam Works in conceptulisation, style and presentation.Amongst its many characteristics, the most striking are the descriptions of Nature, both flora and fauna, in such intricate details which are unique to Sangam alone. She then went on to say that Kurunthogai means “Anthology of Short Verses” and it entirely consists of Love Poems. They can be categorized according to the landscape thems of Kurinchi,Mullai,Marutham,Neythal and Palai.

In her captivating speech which lasted nearly an hour on that day, she took up the poem யாயும் ஞாயும் யாராகியரோ?,the oft quoted one to explain how the lovers feel united like the rain water falling on redsoil, though being strangers before. She also informed the gathering that the famous poem of Dharumi Episode in the Thiruvilayadal Puranam composed by none other than Lord Shiva himself is part of Kurunthogai. The interaction that followed the speech though very short revealed the literary interests and skills of MRC members which must have been mildly astonishing to the speaker herself.

This was followed by a good review of a book authored by Ms.Bharathi Basker by our member Mr.Sakthi Vadivel who paid huge compliments to the writer as it has solved many domestic problems and helped in strengthening the relationships among womenfolks at home. The writer by commenting on certain real life issues has come out with practical solutions useful to all.
